According to Johan Calleman, "what is imprtant to todays world are not the astronomical aspects of the Mayan Calendar, but the spiritual".
The Tzolkin meaning "count of days" in Yucatec Maya is also known as the sacred calendar.
Long count is the name given to the chronology used by the maya in the classical era to keep track of the long term passage of time. Long count consists of: 13 baktuns 400 tuns (360 day period). One baktun is thus 400 X 360 = 144,000 days, amounting to 394.3 solar years.
The beginning date of the thirteen batkuns of the long count was the day we would call Aug, 11, 3114 BC.
If we add thirteen batkuns to this date we arrive at Dec, 21, 2012 C.E.
