The Four Cardinal Directions:
According to the Maya, the world tree is what creates and maintains the four directions of the world. After the Spanish conquest, the world tree was merged with the catholic cross, but in the beliefs of the Maya this now Christian cross still retaines much of its ancient meaning as the center of the cosmos.
The four directions are associated with different energies and colors that give them different qualities. The four directions are related to the center of the world, called "Yaxkin" by the Maya.
In the Native American view, the four directions embody spiritual qualities that influence human life differently depending on the regning time cycle.
The spiitual winds generated by the four directions, dominating different time cycles, are the very esence of the Mayan view, whereas in the typical European view the four directions are seen as a passive coordinate system applied to earth.
Mental and spiritual differences between east and west. Where is the line? Where is the center of the medicine wheel?
Preliminary hypothosis says 12 degrees east through central Europe and central Africa.
Our interest is not the phsysical but spiritual geography.
We must use the Mayan Calendar and study the directions in which the spiritual winds have been blowing as the energies of the 13 Heavens of the Great Cycle have shifted. We can then track historical events occuring at the baktun shifts of the Great Cycle in relationship to a hypothetical midline of the planet running through longitude 12 degrees East.
